The World’s Most Calming Sound

Our Brief

Calm approached us to create an auditory experience that harmoniously blends the restorative qualities of nature with scientifically-backed sound frequencies, aimed at reducing stress and promoting deep relaxation. We developed Calm Noise—a soundscape that integrates White, Pink, Brown, and Green noise, all known for their calming properties. This unique auditory blend evokes the gentle rustling of leaves and the soft flow of water, fostering balance within the nervous system.

The Science

The Calm Noise track was meticulously crafted from start to finish, grounded in evidence-led principles.  Alongside Calm’s Chief Clinical Officer, we conducted an extensive exploration of sound and various noise studies, and eventually combined the following sound types:

  • White Noise: Renowned for its ability to mask background distractions, aiding concentration and sleep in noisy environments. Its steady sound helps settle the mind
  • Pink Noise: Softer than white noise, with a more balanced tone. Research suggests it can improve sleep by gently slowing brainwave activity
  • Brownian Noise: A deeper, richer sound reminiscent of thunder or distant waterfalls, often perceived as particularly soothing and grounding
  • Green Noise: Incorporates natural elements like wind through trees or ocean waves, creating a peaceful and relaxing mental space

The Outcome

To validate the effectiveness of Calm Noise, we conducted user testing with 75 participants. Each user experienced a session with a loopable track, allowing us to measure real-world outcomes in mood improvement and stress relief.

Our results indicated that :

  • Effectiveness: 89% found Calm Noise effective in reducing anxiety and aiding sleep
  • Mood: 70% reported a moderate to strong uplift in mood compared to a general participant pool
  • Emotion: 71% of participants experienced positive improvements

The success of the soundscape underscores its role in enhancing relaxation and well-being. We also created a pack of sleep soundscapes and Non-Sleep Deep Rest (NSDR) to complement Calm’s ideal bedtime routine.
